Our epistle reading from Romans encapsulates the basics of the Judeo- Christian religion on which this country's culture is based. 

" Thou shalt not commit adultery.  Thou shalt not kill. Thou shall not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness. Thou shalt not covet. And if there be any other commandment it shall briefly be comprehended in this saying, namely, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. " 

T he Collect for Advent, 
`Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility, that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and for ever, Amen' 
`Give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, NOW . . ' Suddenly it is not the historical past or the unknown future that is brought before our minds, but the immediate present---Now in Creaton at twenty five minutes to eleven on Sunday 4[th] September 2011 : it is NOW that we are to cast away the works of darkness.
